WHITTIER — Coroner’s officials Thursday confirmed that an elderly man and woman found dead in their home earlier this week died in a murder-suicide.
The bodies of Gisela Hohensee, 83, and her husband Wilfried Hohensee, 85, were discovered by a family friend about 10:30 a.m. Monday inside the couple’s home in the 11800 block of Floral Drive, Los Angeles County Department of Coroner Lt. Larry Dietz said.
Police initially suspected Wilfriend Hohensee fatally shot his wife before turning the gun on himself.
Autopsies confirmed that scenario, according to Dietz.
Gisela Hohensee died from a gunshot wound to the head and her death was ruled a homicide, the lieutenant said.
Wilfried Hohensee also died from a gunshot wound to the head, though his death was ruled a suicide, Dietz said.
A motive was not available Thursday. Police initially said they had been told the husband suffered from a variety of health problems.
The investigation was being handled by the Whittier Police Department.

Mother questions fatal deputy-involved shooting in West Whittier

Robert McAfee, 29, Whittier

WEST WHITTIER — A mourning mother is questioning the fatal shooting of her son by a sheriff’s deputy in the backyard of his home last week.
Robert McAfee Jr., 29, of Whittier allegedly pointed a gun at a deputy prior to being shot July 19 in a backyard in the 6800 block of Duchess Drive, in the unincorporated county area of West Whittier, according to Los Angeles County sheriff’s and coroner’s officials. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
But McAfee’s mother, Lydia Provencio of Maryland, said the official account conflicts with information she has received about the shooting from witnesses. And her son had recently told her he was afraid of Pico Rivera sheriff’s deputies.
“I just want the truth out,” the mother said. “I don’t believe my son was an angel. Nevertheless. he was my son. And i just think life should have respect, no matter what, no matter who you are.”
In a written statement issued by the Sheriff’s Headquarter’s Bureau the day of the shooting, a deputy and a sergeant were on patrol when, “they stopped to talk to two known gang members.”
As the deputy and sergeant exited their car, one of the two men — later identified as McAfee — ran to the backyard of a nearby home, according to the sheriff’s statement.
The sergeant followed McAfee into the yard and saw McAfee standing in the backyard and pointing a handgun “in his direction,” prompting the sergeant to open fire, sheriff’s officials said. The name of the involved sergeant was not released.
An autopsy determined McAfee died from a gunshot wound to the chest, coroner Lt. Larry Dietz said. He had also suffered a non-fatal gunshot wound to his hip.
The sheriff’s statement indicated the suspect’s loaded handgun was recovered from the scene.
But Provencio said she understood that the gun was recovered from the backyard of a next door neighbor. She questioned how that was possible if her son had been pointing the gun at the sergeant, as sheriff’s officials described. There was no one else in the backyard, she added.
No one answered the door at the neighboring home Saturday.
The handling homicide detectives could not be reached for comment.
Neighbor Jessica Gutierrez said she was making lunch for her son when she heard what sounded like three gunshots.
She said what she saw next contradicted the scenario given by sheriff’s officials, who stated that the shooting took place within the backyard.
“When I heard the first gunshot, I looked and saw the deputy shooting outside of the backyard, standing in the driveway, and after he shot he ran in the backyard. “
The officers did spend some time in the neighbors backyard, and the detectives also went back there for a period of time.
Gutierrez said she did not know whether a gun was recovered from the neighboring yard.
“(Deputies) did spend some time in the neighbors backyard, and the detectives also went back there for a period of time,” she said.
The two yards are separated by a thick hedge about 8 feet tall.
A memorial of candles sat on McAfee’s front porch of the home of McAfee and his father, Robert McAfee Sr., however no one answered the door Saturday.
Provencio said her son had encountered Pico Rivera-based deputies many times, and the home where he lived with his father was searched by deputies about two weeks before the fatal deputy-involved shooting. The son described the encounters as harassment and told his mother he feared for his safety.
“He called me two-and-a-half to three weeks ago and he said, ‘Mom, they’re out to kill me,’” Provencio said.
She said she asked him what he had been doing to gain the attention of deputies, and he responded that he had been largely staying at home and trying to avoid any trouble.
The mother said she was aware her son, who had served time in jail, was involved with a gang. But she said she couldn’t imagine that he would point a gun at a sheriff’s deputy.
McAfee had been released from jail in February, his mother said.
He had a criminal history dating back to 2004, according to search of Los Angeles County Superior Court records.
He was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm in June of 2012. In 2009, he was convicted of drug possession, possession of drug paraphernalia and being under the influence of drugs.
McAfee was convicted of domestic battery in 2006, and the unlawful taking of a vehicle in 2004, records show. He had convictions for driving on a suspended or revoked license in 2009, 2009 and twice in 2005.
Beyond having doubts about the shooting itself, Provencio said the manner in which family members were treated in the hours after the deputy-involved shooting was “cruel.”
For more than four hours, officials would not tell family members whether McAfee was involved, or whether he was dead.
In addition to his parents, Robert McAfee Jr. is survived by his wife, Edna McAfee; their sons Robert III, 7, and Charles, 5; and two brothers, Provencio said.

SOUTH WHITTIER — A former California High School history teacher and junior varsity basketball coach faces sentencing next month after pleading no contest to having sex with a then-17-year-old student, officials said.
“John Gilbert Orellano pleaded no contest to one count of unlawful sexual intercourse on July 26,” Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Shiara Davila-Morales said. The plea was entered at what was scheduled to be a hearing to determine a date for the 36-year-old Anaheim resident.
Orellano was initially charged with two counts of unlawful intercourse, as well as two counts of oral copulation with a minor.
He admitted the single count under a negotiated plea arrangement, Davila-Morales said.
He was ordered back to Norwalk Superior Court for sentencing Aug. 30, when he was expected to receive 90 days jail time, as well as five years felony probation, she said. He will not be required to register as a sex offender.
Prosecutors alleged Orellano had sex with the student in February, district attorney’s officials said.
The investigation into Orellano began with allegations that he had sent sexually explicit messages to the girl beginning in January, according to Sgt. Nancy Drake of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Special Victims Bureau.
But as the investigation went on, detectives determined that the case involved more than just electronic communication.
He was placed on administrative leave once Whittier Union High School District officials learned of the allegations on March 13, district officials said. Orellano, who had worked for the WUHSD for two years, resigned two days later.
“We worked very closely with the Sheriff’s Department to get resolution to this issue,” WUHSD Superintendent Sandra Thorstenson said. “It was our coordination with the department that initiated an investigation and (Orellano) was immediately removed from the classroom.”
WUHSD officials added that the incident was handled swiftly and appropriately by both district staff and law enforcement.
“In addition to the student’s trust he violated, I truly feel that this was a crime against the entire community,” Thorstenson said. “Now that the courtroom portion of this ordeal is over, it is my hope that he is punished accordingly.”
Orellano has remained free through the trial process after posting $240,000 bail three days after his May 15 arrest, according to county booking records. He could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

LOS ANGELES — An off-duty Los Angeles police officer accused of punching another man and breaking his jaw in an unprovoked attack at a Whittier house party has pleaded “no contest” to a misdemeanor charge, authorities said.
Under a negotiated plea agreement during a hearing Monday, Donald Albert Peko, 36, admitted a single count of disturbing the peace, while a count of felony battery was dismissed, Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Jane Robison said.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Horwitz immediately sentenced Peko to two years of summary probation, Robison said. He was further ordered to perform 200 hours of community service and obey a court order to stay away from the victim, then-23-year-old Christopher Price.
Prosecutors said Peko was attending a family party July 23, 2011, when he told the victim he could not leave the party with an open container of alcohol.
When Price began drinking to finish the bottle, Peko was accused of punching him “without warning,” breaking his jaw, D.A.’s officials said in a written statement.
After an investigation that lasted more than four months, prosecutors filed charges against Peko in December of 2012. Whittier police conducted the investigation.
Peko’s status with the LAPD was unclear Thursday.
“It’s a personnel matter,” CHP Officer Bruce Borihanh of the LAPD’s media relations section said. “We don’t discuss personnel matters.”
In general, he added, a police officer convicted of a crime is kept off of patrol duties until an administrative hearing is held to make a determination regarding employment.

SOUTH WHITTIER — A teenage suspect was arrested and a second one was sought following an armed robbery at a gas station early Wednesday, officials said.
The heist took place just after 7:30 a.m. at the ARCO station at Painter Avenue and Mulberry Drive in unincorporated South Whittier, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Sgt. Craig Harman said.
Two young men armed with a handgun entered the business and demanded money from the register, the sergeant said. The employee complied and the two robbers fled.
Whittier police spotted a person matching a description of one of the robbers in their city and detained him before finding money and a handgun discarded nearby, Harman said. Witnesses identified the detained teen as one of the robbers and he was arrested.
He was described as a 17-year-old Whittier boy, Harman said, and investigators were looking into the possibility he was connected to other recent area robberies.
The second robber remained at-large, officials said. A detailed description was not available.

WHITTIER — A Los Angeles gang member bit and stabbed a man who caught him in the midst of an alleged car burglary late Wednesday before ultimately being arrested with the help of police dog, officials said.
Stephen Rojas, 24, of Los Angeles, was booked on suspicion of robbery and assault with a deadly weapon, Whittier police Sgt. Jim De Masi said.
The victim was at home about 9:35 p.m. in the 10800 block of Illinois herd someone rummaging through his car, De Masi said in a written statement. The resident went outside to see a burglar pocketing items from the car.
“The victim confronted the suspect and a fight ensued during which the suspect bit the victim,” De Masi said. “As the fight continued, the victim was also slashed with a sharp object.”
The victim suffered injuries to his hand, he said.
The robber fled as witnesses called the police, the sergeant said. Officers arrived within moments and surrounded the neighborhood, trapping the suspect inside their search perimeter.
With the help of a police dog, officers found Rojas hiding in a nearby residential garage, officials said. The man refused orders to surrender and the police dog was sent in after him. He was taken into custody after suffering a superficial dog bite wound to his leg.
Officials took the suspect for medical treatment before booking him on suspicion of robbery and assault with a deadly weapon, De Masi said.
He was identified as a Los Angeles gang member, he added.

A Norwalk jury is deliberating the fate of a Los Angeles man accused of murdering two San Gabriel Valley men and a Mexico man after luring them with an offer to sell a car in South Whittier nearly 10 years ago.
Briaell Lee could face the death penalty if convicted of the three counts of murder with which he has been charged.
He’s accused of the fatal Jan. 27, 2004, fatal shootings of Mario Larios, 23, of West Covina, his cousin Edgar Valles, 22, of La Puente and their friend, Fernando Pina, 25, of Mexico, Los Angeles County District Attorney’s officials said. The men were slain when they arrived at the South Whittier home of Lee’s co-defendant, Cimarron Bell, 39, to discuss purchasing a Chevrolet Monte Carlo for $8,500.
None of the three men knew Lee or Bell prior to meeting them to discuss the car sale, prosecutors said.
Following the conclusion of closing arguments in the case, the Norwalk Superior Court jury began deliberating Thursday, court officials said.
5-4-04-3 BELL 2Co-defendant Cimarron Bell of South Whittier has already been convicted of these three murders, as well as another, and sentenced to death in August of 2011. Bell was also convicted of the murder of his 22-year-old girlfriend Ineka Edmondson of Compton, whose body was found Nov. 12, 2003, in a car at a La Habra industrial park.
In addition to the murders, Lee and Bell were further accused of the special allegations multiple murders, murder for financial gain and lying in wait, allegations Bell’s jury found to be true, making him eligible for capital punishment, Los Angeles County District Attorney’s officials said.
The three would-be car buyers were killed solely for their money, Edmondson’s slaying also involved personal motives on the part of Bell, according to Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Todd Hicks, who prosecuted Bell along with Deputy District Attorney Michele Hanisee.
Hanisee described the alleged murder-for-money plot as “very egregious,” targeting “particularly innocent and vulnerable victims.
In Edmondson’s slaying, Bell, who was involved in a check-cashing scheme with the woman and believed she was stealing from him, arranged a fatal ambush.
He called her to meet him at Morgan Metals, where he worked and kissed her hello before shooting her three times in the head at close range, D.A.’s officials said.
According to county booking records, Lee had been held without bail pending trial since his arrest in February of 2004.

WEST WHITTIER — Authorities Wednesday released the name of a West Whittier father who was shot to death over the weekend in the front yard of his own home.
Arturo Roque, 45, died at a hospital shortly after he was wounded in the 10:06 p.m. shooting in the 6100 block of Pioneer Boulevard, Los Angeles County Department of Coroner Assistant Chief of Operations Ed Winter said.
Roque was not a gang member, however detectives suspect his killer or killers were, Lt. John Corina of the Sheirff’s Homicide Bureau said.
“According to several witnesses, the victim, along with his wife and another couple, were in the front yard of the victim’s residence when a white-colored sedan drove north on Pioneer Boulevard,” according to Lt. John Corina of the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau. The vehicle was further described as a compact car.
“As the car drove past the victim’s house, someone from inside the car shot at the individuals standing in the front yard, striking the victim,” he said. Roque was struck multiple times by the gunfire. None of the others were injured.
No argument or exchange of words preceded the shooting, Corina said.
“He was standing with his wife and another couple that was visiting,” the lieutenant said. “They were just hanging out for the holiday weekend.”
No description of the attacker or attackers inside the car was available.
While Roque himself was not involved with a gang, Corina said one of his relatives was believed to be. Detectives were looking into the possibility that the relative’s suspected gang ties were involved in the shooting.
A person from the neighborhood, who did not give his name for fear of retaliation, said Roque was a soft-spoken, responsible man who worked as a gardener. “He was a father of five children, the youngest, a teenager, and he took care of his family,” he said. “I was crushed when I found out (about Roque); he loved his family and was trying to raise (his kids) to grow up to be good citizens.”
The neighbor said Roque mowed most of the neighbors’ lawns and worked from dawn to dusk. “I have nothing but nice things to say about him,” he said.
According to public records, Rogue had lived in the home for 10 years.

A Norwalk Superior Court jury convicted Briall Lee, 31, in August of second-degree murder, as well as the special sentence-enhancing allegation that he used a gun in the crime, Los Angeles County District Attorney’s and court officials said. He received the sentence from Judge Robert Higa.
